Smooth's Hosts Bike Seminar for City of Long Beach



This past Monday, Smooth's hosted a bicycling seminar with an expert from Copenhagen that spoke to high ranking city officials, Bike-Friendly Long Beach and Long Beach bicycle advocates. The seminar focused on the positive benefits that come with implementing quality bicycling initiatives throughout the city.

In July of 2008, Long Beach announced that it aimed to be the most 'Bike-Friendly City' and planned to develop two bicycle 'boulevards' using a $330,000 grant from Los Angeles County. The full story can be found here



Bikestation, a Long Beach bike parking facility and service center, first started in Long Beach and since then has expanded to five other cities. A Press Telegram article about the company can be found here.

Bike Friendly Long Beach's mission statement includes
-creating safe, connected, and easy to navigate bike routes
-offering bike friendly public facilities, transit and shops
-promoting bike share opportunities throughout the city
-encouraging the community, through education, to create a culture where cyclists and motorists interact safely
-implementing fun, healthy bicycle programs

Current efforts of Bike Friendly Long Beach include operation and maintenance of Long Beach Bikestation, City Bike Share and installing 400 bike racks throughout the city that incorporated public art. Planning includes creating safe and accessible bicycling environment, creating East/West and North/South connections and encouraging commuter and recreational riders.

The expert of Copenhagen listed many key consequences on become more bike friendly which included: helping the environment and alleviating traffic. Smooth's continues to supports quality initiatives like these for the City of Long Beach.
